I haven’t played What the Golf?, though I’ve heard plenty of praise for its variety and quirky humour. What the Bat? follows a similar path, but with a unique twist—your character has baseball bats for hands. Plus, this one is a VR experience.
Played from a first-person perspective, it features a variety of themed levels, most of which are short and snappy—especially when the solution is obvious, as some undeniably are. While this might be a drawback in other games, the humour here helps balance it out, and other stages challenge you to think more outside the box.
What sort of things will you be getting up to when playing What the Bat? Expect a wild assortment of situations, with plenty of surprises along the way. Some levels feature unexpected mechanics, keeping things fresh and unpredictable.
One moment, you might be brushing your teeth with a bat, while the next has you carefully moving a statue and dodging a searchlight. In another stage, taking a swing might send your bat flying, while elsewhere, you’ll be helping cats cross the road or knocking apples from trees. Perhaps you might even fix some leaks or crack some eggs along the way.
If the game sounds completely random, that’s because it most certainly is. However, the quirkiness and silliness of it all contribute to a wonderfully playful personality. The basic yet charming cartoon visuals are a delight and fit perfectly with the tone, as does the wonderfully zany music, which can get delightfully offbeat at times.
The game has over 100 levels, though it’s possible to see it all within 3 to 4 hours. Since release, however, developer Triband has added the Battywood update, introducing another 100 or so puzzles inspired by everything from Jurassic Park, Titanic, Spider-Man to Lady and the Tramp. This brings even more craziness and longevity to the game.
What the Bat? PSVR 2 Review Summary – A Wild and Wacky VR Experience
With everything said, What the Bat? is a very simple but effective game, and its silliness and humour only enhance its appeal. It’s not the type of game with layers of depth, but its playful nature, variation, and unexpected elements make it a very memorable experience. My introduction to the What the? games has certainly sparked my interest in seeking out more from developer Triband in the future.
